A hot matcha latte, an iced matcha latte and a dirty matcha with espresso

How to Make a Matcha Latte at Home (Hot, Iced or Dirty)

A good matcha latte is quick to make at home and costs a fraction of a café one. Here's the basic method, plus iced and "dirty" versions.

The basic method

  1. Mix 1 heaped tablespoon (10g) of Mind Full Matcha with a splash (about 30ml) of hot water at around 80°C into a smooth paste.
  2. Heat about 200ml of milk until steaming but not boiling, and froth it if you like.
  3. Pour the milk over the matcha paste and stir.

Mind Full Matcha already contains oat and coconut milk powders, so it's creamy even made with hot water alone.

Iced matcha latte

Make the paste, pour it over a glass of ice and top up with cold milk. Our iced matcha superlatte has the full recipe.

Dirty matcha

A "dirty matcha" is a matcha latte with a shot of espresso poured on top. It combines the grassy matcha with roasted coffee, and the caffeine of both, so it's a stronger drink. Keep an eye on your daily total; see how much caffeine is in matcha.

Which milk?

Oat is creamy and naturally sweet, coconut is rich, dairy froths best and almond is light. Our guide to the best milk for a matcha latte compares them.

Common mistakes

  • Boiling water, which makes it bitter
  • No paste first, which makes it clumpy
  • Too much powder; follow the pack

Matcha and milk, plus sweetener if you like. A latte blend like Mind Full Matcha also contains milk powders for creaminess.

Start with a splash of hot water to make a smooth paste, then add milk.

Are matcha lattes good for you?

It depends what's in them. Made at home with unsweetened milk, they're low in sugar; café versions with syrups can be much sweeter. See our guide to whether matcha is good for you.
